Jerry was born and raised in Pueblo, he lettered in football, basketball and tennis (won the Colorado State Singles Championship in 1951) and received a Scholastic Scholarship to the University of Colorado.
He lettered four years in tennis at the University. The tennis team won Big Seven Championships in both his freshman and junior years.
Jerry graduated from the University in 1955. In 1958 he went to work for Moore Realty Co. in Denver where he worked 13 years. Jerry started his own company, Gerald J. Starika & Associates, Inc. in January 1972.
During the last 39 years, his company has conducted brokerage business and developed and owned real estate properties in Denver and Pueblo.
The Starika family has sponsored over 15 children overseas through Child Care International (formerly known as Christian Children's Fund) since 1972.
In 1983 Jerry was Chairman of the Finance Committee and Leadership Gifts for the Mile Hi Church Expansion Fund Campaign. He and his family have made sizable contributions to the Mile Hi Church Expansion Fund, Mile Hi Church Fund Raising Campaign and the University of Colorado for the construction of a state of the art classroom in the new Koelbel Business School Building.
In 2007, the Starika Family Foundation Scholarship Fund was established. The Foundation sponsors two students each year from Central and/or Centennial to enroll at the University of Colorado for a four year term and receive $2,500 for each year of the scholarship. There are eight students sponsored annually, two new students every year for four successive years.
In 2009, the Gerald J. And Joan D. Starika Business Scholarship Endowment at the University of Colorado was created in their will. These funds will go to the Leeds School of Business toward annual scholarships for students applying for financial assistance to the business school of the University.
