Rear Admiral Daniel C. Richardson joined the staff of Valley Forge Military Academy and College in January 1991 as Chief of Staff, following a 31-year career in the United States Navy.
After graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1959, his first assignment was as an instructor in the Mechanical Engineering Department of the U.S. Naval Academy. After flight training at Pensacola, Florida and designation as a naval aviator he served in carrier based attack squadrons. He requested and received instruction at the U.S. Submarine School and later served on various submarines of the Pacific fleet, qualifying for command of submarines. His sea commands include a cruiser, a destroyer and later group commander of all surface ships in the Western Pacific Ocean.
Rear Admiral Richardson's significant shore assignments include duties in research and development, operations, planning, manpower, training and Department of Defense budget preparations. He served as Executive Assistant in the offices of the Secretary of the Navy.
Rear Admiral Richardson holds Masters Degrees in Administration from George Washington University and Mechanical Engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. In 1990 he continued postgraduate study at Harvard University. He retired from Valley Forge Military Academy and College in 2006.
His military decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal and five Legion of Merit awards. He is included in Marquis' Who's Who in America and in 1968 was designated as an Outstanding Young Man of America by the outstanding Americans Foundation. His publications include scientific articles on high-speed fluid flow in both air and liquids.
Rear Admiral Richardson is a member of Sigma Xi (a scientific research society), Naval Submarine League, Surface Navy Association, Naval Academy Alumni Association, and past member of the American Society of Naval Engineers and American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Rear Admiral Richardson is the only naval officer on record to be qualified in all three communities of naval combat, which are air, surface and submarine warfare.
Rear Admiral Richardson is married to the former Leslie Sullivan of Newport, RI.
